Actress Debra Messing has adopted a strict new diet during gruelling preparations for her Broadway debut, swapping her favourite foods for "bone marrow broth". The former Will and Grace star plays a lovelorn Irish woman in John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar, which opens in New York City this month (Jan14), opposite Tony Award-winner Brian F. O'Byrne. With just days to go before opening night at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on 23 January (14), Messing reveals she is training hard for the stage stint and sticking to a bizarre diet to make sure she is healthy for the run. She tells the New York Post, "I'm in training for this. Don't go out at night. Eat specific strengthening foods that won't tax my body. High protein quinoa grain for breakfast. Drink bone marrow broth. No coffee, alcohol, sugar or gluten that makes you tired." Messing is also working hard to perfect her Irish accent, adding, "My script's covered with dialect notes. I'm nervous about the challenges, and the brogue's not quite there yet. (I am) studying techniques, I took from the shelf my warm-up NYU (New York University) acting books that deal with dialect work. "NYU helped. I'd learned the phonetic alphabet in a three-year speech class, so I knew how it needed to be. And I've met with a dialect coach, who's perfecting the Midlands Ireland sound."
