12 Years A Slave captures number one spot at U.K. box office

Oscar-tipped movie 12 Years A Slave has scored another triumph by topping the U.K. box office over the weekend (10-12Jan14) with ticket sales in excess of $4 million (£2.5 million). Steve McQueen's drama about a free African-American man sold into slavery shot straight to number one following its first weekend on release, knocking another awards season favourite, American Hustle, into second place with $3 million (£1.9 million). The box office success of 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle came on the same weekend they triumphed at the Golden Globes. 12 Years A Slave was named Best Motion Picture (Drama), while American Hustle landed the award for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) as well as acting prizes for its stars Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence. The U.K. box office chart also featured The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in third place, garnering $2.4 million (£1.5 million) in its fifth week of release, while Frozen and Last Vegas landed in fourth and fifth place respectively. Both films took around $2.1 million (£1.3 million).
