Carol Channing celebrated in New York ahead of 93rd birthday

Legendary entertainer Carol Channing was feted during a special tribute show in New York City on Monday (20Jan14) to celebrate her impending 93rd birthday. The veteran actress took to the stage at The Town Hall venue for Gentleman Prefer Blondes: An Intimate Evening With Carol Channing, which was hosted by singer Justin Vivian Bond. The Broadway icon received a standing ovation from the crowd, which included British actors Sir Ian McKellen and Alan Cumming, before answering questions from Bond about her life. She was also treated to video messages from fellow musical theatre stars Bernadette Peters and Chita Rivera, who both wished her a happy birthday ahead of her big day on 31 January (14). The event was also held to mark the 50th anniversary of hit musical Hello, Dolly!, which opened on Broadway in 1964 with Channing in the title role.
