Pop star Lily Allen vowed to make a return to music after taking time off to raise a family, because life as a stay-at-home mum was harder than she imagined. The Smile hitmaker stepped out of the spotlight in 2010 to get married and have children, and she is now mum to daughters Ethel, two, and Marnie, one, after walking down the aisle with Sam Cooper in 2011. Allen quickly settled into family life at her sprawling mansion in the English countryside - but she soon realised she missed the glamour of showbiz and decided to reignite her pop career. The singer, whose comeback single Hard Out Here was released in November (13 ), tells Elle magazine, "I hate speaking about myself in the third person, but it's helpful here. Lily Allen has found it quite difficult and stressful trying to reconnect. And Lily Cooper is happy because she's not sitting at home playing with toys and speaking with two human beings that can't speak back. There was a void. I'm a creative person, I like to speak my mind. Making music is the perfect vehicle for that... "I did feel at that time (when I went on hiatus) that I wanted to leave and never come back. I wanted to concentrate on making a family. I've done that. I love that. I thought I'd be better suited to that. I love my kids and I wouldn't trade them in for anything - no mother would - but I'm not the sort of person who can sit at home and look after them all day... (I always felt) 'I'm not going to be like that (a working mum), I'm going to be a real mum.' But it's not like that. You get there and it's nice, but..."
