Scent of a Woman star James Rebhorn dead at 65

Character actor James Rebhorn has lost his long battle with skin cancer at the age of 65. The Scent of a Woman star, who was diagnosed with melanoma in 1992, passed away on Friday (21Mar14) at his home in New Jersey.
Rebhorn began his prolific career in the 1951 TV series Search for Tomorrow and later landed roles in U.S. soaps Guiding Light and As The World Turns.
He went on to star in films including My Cousin Vinny (1992), Independence Day (1996), The Game (1997), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Meet the Parents (2000), and appeared alongside Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman in 1992 and Carlito’s Way in 1993.
In addition to his movie work, he graced the stage in a number of theatre productions, such as Too Much, Too Much, Too Many, I’m Not Rappaport and Twelve Angry Men.
He was also known for his TV work, appearing in series like Seinfeld, Law & Order, White Collar and Homeland, in which he played the father of Claire Danes’ character, CIA agent Carrie Mathison.
Paying tribute to the actor via Twitter.com, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich writes, “It’s a sad day. I just learned James Rebhorn passed. Such a great talent and always a joy to work with. RIP.”
His My Cousin Vinny co-star, Ralph Macchio, also tweeted about the loss, posting, “RIP (to) a gentleman”, while actor Patton Oswalt adds, “James Rebhorn, RIP. On behalf of all film buffs, we took for granted you’d always be there & be great, ’cause you always were.”
Actress Rose McGowan shared her condolences, writing, “I’m very sad about James Rebhorn. What a marvelous actor. Loved him in The Game”, and Tom Hanks’ actor son Colin tweets, “Sad news about James Rebhorn. No matter the role, he was always comforting to watch. Effortless.”
