Musical duo Broken Bells are pouring cash into a project designed to protect Earth from asteroids. Singer James Mercer and producer Danger Mouse have agreed to donate a portion of proceeds from ticket sales from their upcoming U.S. tour to the B'S Foundation's Sentinel Mission, a drive to seek out and catalogue asteroids heading towards Earth. The band will hand over $1 (63p) from every ticket sold, while they will also play a special show at Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre in April (14) which will feature an afterparty on the venue's roof. The bash will feature special guests and telescopes set up by NASA experts. The Sentinel telescope is expected to launch in 2018 and will track 90 per cent of all asteroids large than 140 metres (460 feet), the size at which a space rock could do significant damage to Earth.
