Veteran actress Vanessa Redgrave joined a demonstration outside a prison in London on Friday (28Mar14) to protest against a book ban. New regulations were introduced in the U.K. in November (13) ruling that inmates can no longer have books and other items sent into the prison where they are serving their time. A number of authors have expressed their disgust at the decision and campaigners took to the streets to spread their message on Friday. Redgrave joined a protest outside Pentonville prison in north London along with Howard's End actor Samuel West, poet Carol Ann Duffy and authors A.L. Kennedy and Kathy Lette. The Oscar-winning actress said taking away literature eroded prisoners' hope and added, "Prison is supposed to be a place of rehabilitation. It is not supposed to be a place where you are beaten down to your knees and then, if you say sorry enough times, you are given an extra sandwich."
