Celebrity publicist Max Clifford has been jailed for eight years for a series of sex attacks dating back to the 1970s. The public relations guru was convicted of eight charges of indecent assault on Monday (28Apr14) following a trial in which several women told how he groped and molested them after dazzling them with his showbiz links. Some of the attacks took place at his office in London, and Clifford was accused of luring several victims with the promise of movie or modelling work. Clifford, whose clients have included Marlon Brando, Muhammad Ali, Simon Cowell, and Frank Sinatra, had told Southwark Crown Court in south London that all the women were lying, but on Friday (02May14) he was sentenced to eight years behind bars. Judge Anthony Leonard told Clifford the offences were "not trivial but of a very serious nature" and he had "shown no remorse" throughout the trial and led a "double existence". The judge told him he would serve half his sentence before being considered for release. Speaking before the sentencing hearing, Clifford told Sky News, "It's not the best day of my life, is it? But that's how it is. I just have to face up to it." Clifford had been cleared of two further charges of indecent assault, and a single charge on which the jury could not reach a verdict has now been left on file and will not be proceeded with.
