TV actor Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. has died, aged 95. The star, most famous for his role in long-running detective drama The F.B.I., died of natural causes at his ranch in California on Friday (02May14). Two of his children, Stephanie and Efrem Zimbalist III, wrote in a statement,"We are heartbroken to announce the passing into peace of our beloved father, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., today at his Solvang, Calif. (California) ranch. A devout Christian, he actively enjoyed his life to the last day, showering love on his extended family, playing golf, and visiting with close friends." Zimbalist, son of violinist Efrem Zimbalist and acclaimed opera singer Alma Gluck, became a household name in the U.S. from 1958 by playing private eye Stuart Bailey on 77 Sunset Strip, which ran until 1964. He then stepped into detective shoes once more to play Inspector Lewis Erskine on The F.B.I., which lasted for nine series. He ventured into movies with leading roles in The Chapman Report and Harlow before returning to television. In the 1990s, he most famously voiced Alfred Pennyworth, the butler of Batman, in Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures. His last movie role was in 2008's The Delivery.
