Japanese actress Shirley Yamaguchi dead at 94

Japanese actress Shirley Yamaguchi has died at the age of 94. The star passed away of heart failure on 7 September (14) in Tokyo, Japan.
Yamaguchi was born to Japanese parents in China in 1920 and was adopted by her father’s Chinese friend, who renamed her Xianglan, at the age of 13.
She began her career as singer Li Xianglan and also starred in several Chinese-language propaganda films.
After she was accused of being a Chinese traitor following World War II, a friend produced family records proving she was Japanese, saving her from execution and allowing her to leave China.
Before retiring from the entertainment industry in 1958, Yamaguchi starred in many Japanese and Chinese-language and Hollywood films including Honeymoon Express, China Nights, Scandal and Escape at Dawn.
In 1974, she was elected to parliament’s Upper House as a member of the governing Liberal Democratic Party, where she served until 1992.
