Cult TV show Twin Peaks will officially return to the small screen in 2016 to mark the 25th anniversary of the series’ demise.
The 1990s show, starring Kyle MacLachlan as quirky FBI Agent Dale Cooper, was cancelled after just two seasons, but creators David Lynch and Mark Frost sent fans into a spin on Friday (03Oct14) when they dropped a big hint on Twitter about Agent Cooper’s return. In the cryptic tweet, Lynch wrote, “Dear Twitter friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee (sic).” The quote comes from a repeated dream sequence in the show, while the hashtag refers to the line MacLachlan’s caffeine-loving character uttered over and over again.
Now bosses at America’s Showtime network have delivered the news fans have been waiting for – Twin Peaks will be making a comeback in 2016. Lynch and Frost will start production on a new season next year (15), with the Blue Velvet filmmaker planning to direct all nine episodes.
The forthcoming episodes will be set in present day, with storylines related to those already established in the second season. Frost tells Variety.com, “For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here. And we hope that a lot of people who haven’t been to Twin Peaks yet are going to be equally interested in where the story goes from where we left off.” It is not yet clear if any of the original castmembers will appear in the revived drama series, which revolved around the mysterious death of small town high school sweetheart Laura Palmer.
