Country music songwriter Ed Penney dies at 89

Acclaimed country music songwriter Ed Penney has died, aged 89. Penney, who penned tunes for stars such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Glen Campbell, Lee Greenwood, Hank Williams, Jr., and Anne Murray, among others, passed away last week (ends02Jan15).
In the 1980s, he had a string of hits with blind country artist Terri Gibbs, producing and writing songs such as Ashes to Ashes, Some Days It Rains All Night Long, and Somebody’s Knockin’, which earned Gibbs a Grammy nomination and CMA Award.
Penney also ran a bookstore just outside Nashville, Tennessee, and he served on various boards for organisations such as the Recording Academy and Songwriter’s Guild.
