The gruesome franchise, which stars Tobin Bell as a trap-setting serial killer, has been running since 2004 and has seen one film released every Halloween (31Oct) for the last six years.

The series has now been named the most popular in horror movie history after taking more than $730 million (£487 million) at the worldwide box office and selling more than 30 million DVDs.

Saw has earned a place in the Guinness World Records ahead of other popular scary movie series including Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Producer Mark Burg admits he's stunned by the honour: "I'm still in shock. The fact that we beat out Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a testament to our cast, crew and our partners at Lionsgate (film studio)."

Movie bosses behind the Saw franchise were honoured with a presentation at Comic-Con on Friday (23Jul10) in which Guinness editor-in-chief Craig Glenday handed the award to producers.

The series will conclude this year (10) with the release of the seventh and final film, Saw 3D, in October (10).
