Thomas James Weldon was initially banned from approaching the Oscar winner in 2003 after she complained about harassment.
The court order expired in 2009 and the overzealous fan recently became a nuisance again, prompting Bullock's attorneys to file for a new restraining order against him last month (Jul10).
Weldon voluntarily entered a mental institution in Tennessee, but, according to the court filing, he turned up in an emergency room in Wyoming in June (10) and told hospital staff he had driven from Tennessee in an attempt to meet Bullock at her home in nearby Jackson Hole, after communicating with the actress telepathically.
Court documents suggest Weldon has sent the actress numerous e-mails and faxes in recent years, but he has never met the star.
On Friday morning (06Aug10), a Los Angeles judge approved Bullock's restraining order request and banned Weldon from approaching the actress and her adopted son Louis for three years.
The order also protects her three former stepchildren with ex-husband Jesse James.
Weldon was committed indefinitely to a mental health hospital in Wyoming on Tuesday (03Aug10), according to Bullock's lawyer, Ed McPherson.
