A series of 21 bronze plaques have been set into the walkway of a pier in Walsh Bay to pay tribute to Aussie stars including Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving.

Rush joined local officials including New South Wales Premiere Kristina Keneally at the ceremony to launch the landmark, according to the AAP.

Keneally says, "This landmark promenade is a permanent reminder of the immense contribution that our famous stage actors, producers, directors and designers have made to our national identity. Each one of these 21 theatre icons has helped build Australia's international reputation as a creative powerhouse... Today we celebrate their contribution to NSW, their contribution to the arts, this city, this state and indeed to this country."
