The Truman Show moviemaker received the prestigious Arts and Letters award from the French government for his contribution to cinema across the world.

Weir was presented with the medal by French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand and the director praised France for the country's own influence on movie culture.

He said, "There's not a filmmaker alive who hasn't been influenced by your country and your artists. So, my thanks to you for this tremendous honour. I feel great emotion and (find it) very hard to speak."

Previous recipients include Tim Burton, Marion Cotillard and Stevie Wonder, as well as Weir's The Truman Show star Jim Carrey.
