The host and creator of beloved U.S. radio show A Prairie Home Companion has revealed he’s looking for his replacement after suggesting 70 seems “like a nice round number” to bow out of the live staged programme, which debuted in 1974.
He tells the AARP Bulletin, “The reason to retire is to try to avoid embarrassment; you ought to do it before people are dropping big hints. You want to be the first to come up with the idea. You don’t want to wait until you trip and fall off the stage.”
Keillor was a regular on the weekly show until he suffered a minor stroke in 2009; he was back on air just three weeks later.
