The long-running Cameron Mackintosh stage show is based on the 1862 book of the same name by Victor Hugo and the story has been adapted for a number of films including a 1998 version starring Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman.

Now movie bosses are in talks to bring Mackintosh's musical version to the big screen - and The King's Speech director Hooper is in the frame to take the helm, according to Deadline.com.

The website reports studio bosses at Universal Pictures hope to begin production in Europe later this year (11).
