The Last Tango In Paris director will follow in the footsteps of Woody Allen and Clint Eastwood when he is presented with the event's honorary Palme d'Or award.

The trophy is usually handed out sporadically to filmmakers who have never won the event's top Palme d'Or honour, but it will now become an annual accolade.

A statement from festival organisers reads, "The filmmaker (Bertolucci) has marked Italian cinema with intimate masterpieces as well as monumental frescoes... his political and social involvement, driven by a profound lyricism and an elegant and accurate direction, gives his films a unique place in the history of world cinema."

Bertolucci will be handed the award on 11 May (11) by the president of this year's (11) festival jury, Robert De Niro, who starred in the director's 1976 Italian epic 1900.
