The motor was expected to fetch up to $2 million (£1.25 million) at the Profiles in History in Beverly Hills but it fell a little short.
The movie memorabilia auction grossed over $5.8 million (£3.6 million) and highlights included a letter Walt Disney sent to the creator of Mickey Mouse, Ub Iwerks, announcing the start of Disney Studios ($241,500/£150,900), the Wicked Witch of the West’s crystal ball from The Wizard of Oz ($126,500/£79,000) and John Lennon’s original handwritten lyrics for Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds ($230,000/£143,750).
Over $98,000 (£61,250) from the proceeds will be handed over to victims of the Japan disaster.
