The actress wrote and directed the upcoming film, which was for months known only as the untitled Angelina Jolie Bosnian War Movie because it follows a romance in the 1990s Bosnian Civil War.
Jolie asked test audiences their opinion on dozens of titles before finally settling on In the Land of Blood and Honey, which plays on the phrase "land of milk and honey".
She tells EW.com, "It's a heavy film. You want to find that title that really helps the audience know what they're walking into.
"(Coming up with a title was) driving me crazy. I have lists and lists of titles all over. You become very surprised because you think it's this and they say it's definitely a film about that."
The drama is set to open at Christmas (11) in the U.S. after it was picked up by movie mogul Graham King's production company at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
