The Legends of the Fall star fell for Scamp while working on the movie Crusoe in the late 1980s and he was stunned to find the animal was about to be put down.
He tells WENN, "He was one of those scruffy mid-sized mutts. He stole every scene and then stole my heart. He was gonna be euthanised because we ended up shooting in Yugoslavia and the dog had come from England and they have a six-month quarantine and they had run out of money.
"So rather than pay the quarantine fee, they were going to euthanise Scamp, so my wife and I took him home. He was a great dog."
