The saying "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" no longer implies to the lovable Ellie Kemper, who recently got engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Michael Koman. The actress -- who gained high praise in last spring's hit movie Bridesmaids -- announced the exciting news during a guest appearance Wednesday night on Conan. Kemper also mentioned her fiancé already fits into the family very well, saying, "My family likes him a lot. They've met him many times. My parents are very warm, welcoming people to begin with, but also, Michael's a delight." As is she!
But it took one member of the family a little longer to warm up to the idea. The Office star explained how her grandfather didn't seem to approve of Michael at first, recalling, "We were at Thanksgiving a couple of years ago, and my grandpa's this very tough guy. He started grilling Michael -- what is your family like, what are your job aspirations, what are your goals in life -- and I think Michael kind of started to squirm." She added, "So we finished dinner and we went to the kitchen to have dessert. There was a pumpkin pie and a pecan pie out, and my grandpa said, 'Ellie, what kind of pie are you gonna have?' and I said, 'I don't know, grandpa. They both look really good. I think I'll have pecan.' He said, 'Are you sure, Ellie, because it's okay to keep your options open. You don't have to settle on a pie right now.'" Nothing like using a clever metaphor to create a highly awkward scenario.
But don't worry, the starlet assured everyone that her grandfather is now very fond of her soon-to-be hubby. "Having said that, my grandpa does like pie," Kemper laughed. "It is possible he just wanted to talk about pie!" Simply adorable. Congratulations to the happy couple!
