Those who were unimpressed with Ricky Gervais' rather lukewarm hosting shtick at the Globes this year can rest easy in knowing that he won't be back next year -- or ever again. At least as a host, anyway. That's right, the sharp-tongued comedian is hanging up his hosting hat. Heannounced on his official blog that this would be his final year as the Golden Globes host. And he seems to really mean it this time.
Following the awards ceremony, Gervais wrote a post on his blog, where he further explained his decision to retire from hosting the glitzy ceremony. He wrote, "It was by far my favorite of the three hosting stints. I've told my agent to never let me be persuaded to do it again though. It's like a parachute jump. You can only really enjoy it in retrospect when you realize you didn't die and it was quite an amazing thing to do." At least he'll go out feeling like he's on top, right?
Of course, we've heard this little song and dance before and he always seems to come back for more; he also said he wouldn't come back after last year's debacle. But maybe this time is different. Many people felt Gervais played it safe with his jokes this year and he failed to boost the show's viewership. Perhaps Gervais is losing his touch? I doubt it, but let's face it: his racy monologues were never meant for prime-time television. Don't get me wrong, the guy's hilarious, but just he's not appropriate for an award show.
