Tim Gunn isn't normally a source of surprise, but after his recent confession about his sex life (or rather lack there of), we're pretty shocked. The Project Runway star revealed Tuesday on the ABC talk show The Revolution that he hasn't been intimate with anyone for 29 years. And while some may be shocked by this blunt statement, Gunn admitted that he's totally fine with it and just doesn't feel the need to make sex a part of his life. He said, "I haven't had sex in 29 years. Do I feel like less of a person for it? No. Not even remotely." This is just one of the reasons we love him -- he always sticks to his guns.
What caused him to turn to celibacy? Gunn explained one of the reasons behind his abstinence is rooted in psychological issues from a past relationship. He said, "I was in a very intense relationship for a long time. And my partner ended it, saying that, quite frankly, he was impatient with my sexual performance." I think we can all agree that had to be pretty awful to experience.
But his reasoning wasn't purely based off of a bad relationship. He was also motivated by health concerns since it was at the time when the AIDS epidemic was only just beginning. Gunn said, "I think a lot of people simply retreated because they were concerned about their health. I certainly was," adding, "And I'm happy to be healthy and alive, quite frankly." Obviously, we're all happy he's alive too. And while celibacy may seem like a drastic step to some, it seems to have worked for him, which is really all that matters.
However, he's not completely closed off to the idea of one day having another sexual relationship, saying, "I have feelings. It's not as though I'm some barren forest. I don't want to imply to anyone that I have a mandate that says no sex. I don't. I don't know what's around the corner." Well, whatever happens, we wish him the best of luck.
