If Tracy Morgan and Demi Moore's hospital visits have taught us anything this week it's that celebrities suffer from human problems just like the rest of us and Brad Pitt is no exception. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter magazine, the actor revealed that in his early days of stardom, he used drugs as a way to escape from the pressures of the spotlight, and the practice eventually led to his battle with depression. Ah, welcome to the joys of stardom.
Pitt told the magazine, “I got really sick of myself at the end of the 1990s: I was hiding out from the celebrity thing; I was smoking way too much dope; I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut; and I really got irritated with myself." But drug problems weren't the only struggles he faced. Additionally, the Moneyball star started having some pretty dark, depressing thoughts. Pitt said, “I used to deal with depression, but I don’t now, not this decade — maybe last decade. But that’s also figuring out who you are. He continued, saying, “I see it as a great education, as one of the seasons or a semester: ‘This semester I was majoring in depression.’ I was doing the same thing every night and numbing myself to sleep — the same routine: Couldn’t wait to get home and hide out. But that feeling of unease was growing and one night I just said, ‘This is a waste.’”
Luckily, a trip to the impoverished city of Casablanca, Morocco gave Pitt the wake-up call he needed to snap him out of his funk. He recalled, “I just quit. I stopped grass then — I mean, pretty much — and decided to get off the couch." And we're all pretty glad he did since he's contributed much to the world both on- and off-screen (he's even up for Best Actor in this year's Academy Awards).
Looking back, Pitt realizes he learned a lot from those little bumps along the way, saying, “This idea of perpetual happiness is crazy and overrated, because those dark moments fuel you for the next bright moments; each one helps you appreciate the other." And although it's hard to picture Brad Pitt hitting rock bottom like that (I thought the shaggy goatee was about the extent of it), you have to admire his attitude toward the whole thing and how he's kept himself pretty grounded. It's no wonder he still remains one of the most famous actors of our time -- no depression or drugs (or cane) can bring this guy down. He's the Hollywood creme of the crop.
