Justin Bieber knows that the key to wooing his young audience isn't making dark and edgy comments that freak out girls and their moms. And just because he's 18 now doesn't mean that he's going to start sounding off on sex and politics. (He tried that once in Rolling Stone, and it didn't go so well). In the May issue of Seventeen the singer explains his strategy. “A lot of times, when artists grow older, they lose their younger fans because they’re just trying to get older fans," he says. "But if you try to make good music, then you’ll just appease everybody. I just want to make music that’s good for everybody.”
Considering that he's addressing young readers, it's no surprise that Bieber is still playing the up the non-threatening first boyfriend act in interviews gushing about his girlfriend Selena Gomez. "I’m just trying to make her happy, that’s all," he says. "I think it’s important to make all women feel like they’re princesses, because every girl is a princess. I’m serious."
However, it may not be an act. Judging from this catalog of Beiber's corniest lines, we may never see him break out of his shell and start making creepy/sexy videos about his exes, Justin Timberlake-style.
Bieber on Twitter: "People write to me and say, 'I'm giving up, you're not talking to me.' I just write them a simple message like, 'Never give up,' you know? And it changes their life."
Bieber on Being A Role Model: "Young people in the business have grown up and made the wrong decisions, or bad decisions, and haven't been good role models. To be someone that people look up to is important to me."
Bieber on Dairy: "Singers aren't supposed to have dairy before a show, but we all know I'm a rule breaker. Pizza is just so good!"
Bieber on Fan Mail: "I also try to read all of my fan mail. A lot of them send me candy, which I'm not allowed to eat 'cause my mom says it might be poisonous."
Bieber on Happiness: "I got up there and sang my little eighth-grade butt off, thinking this was possibly the greatest moment of my entire life — of anyone's life — better than hockey, better than Star Wars, better than Grandma's turkey and gravy."
Bieber on Relationship Problems: "If me and my girlfriend were fighting, and it got to the point where she started crying, I would just shut up and hold her."
Bieber on Valentine's Day: "I have one person that I'll be sending flowers to and that's my mom. She's been there since the beginning and has given up a lot for me, I'm very blessed to have her. She likes roses, so I think I might send her the One Less Lonely Girl bouquet."
Bieber on Kissing: “What makes the perfect kiss? Closing your eyes when you kiss is important. Or lifting up the leg, but that's more of a girl thing, I'm manly. Passion is good! [Selena Gomez] brings out the best in me."
Bieber on His Song "Down to Earth": "It's a huge fan favorite. So many people feel where I'm coming from. It doesn't need any spectacular stage effects in the touring show; the best thing I can do is just sing it straight from my heart. I'm not afraid to show my emotions; if you love someone, you should tell them. If you think a girl is beautiful, you should say that. Usher says some songs work best when there's a sob in the singer's voice. You gotta let that deep feeling come through. And that's how I felt about this song. Sometimes the emotion of it is enough to bring tears to my eyes.”
