The movie star, who gave birth to baby daughter Rowan in 2003 via in vitro fertilization, is expecting another child with husband Chris Henchy next spring.
The actress is delighted with the news because she has been excited to give her daughter a sibling, admitting in one recent TV interview, "I don't want her to be the only one dealing with me when she's older."
Shields made headlines earlier this year when she spoke candidly about the depression she experienced after giving birth to her first child in tell-all book Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Post-Partum Depression.
She then came under fire from celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise, who criticized her for taking medication to control her violent mood swings.
Shields plans to use the information she has learned about prescription medication to combat any signs of depression when she becomes a mother for the second time in 2006.
The pregnancy news won't affect the 40-year-old actress' current turn in musical Chicago on Broadway. She wraps up her performance stint next week.
Ironically, the news broke yesterday, on daughter Rowan's second birthday.
