In an interview with Cosmpolitan magazine
for their September 2012 issue, Hale discusses her former body image issues and her eating disorder. According to E!
, Hale says, "I've never really talked about this, but I would go days without eating." The actress opens up about her worrisome eating habits, adding, "Or maybe I'd have some fruit and then go to the gym for three hours. I knew I had a problem… It was a gradual process but I changed myself."
For fans of the starlet, Hale's candid revelation humanizes hers from a once untouchable, gorgeous television star to someone who seems more vulnerable and relatable. Hale's confession brings her to a level alongside many of her teenage fans at a time when body image issues are at an all-time high — Anorexia is the third most common illness among adolescents according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders
. Hale's acknowledgment about her eating disorder won't cure or eliminate the issue all together — but, the more young starlets talk about the proliferation of body image problems, the better.
With the addition of Hale's honesty, it seems that we could be entering a new era of young Hollywood — an era that promotes well-being and self-improvement, no matter how negative the connotations of one's past may be.
