The Grammy-nominated rap star--real name Remy Smith--is suspected of shooting a woman in the city's Meatpacking district on Saturday.
Smith, 26, reported to police and was also charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Her sports utility vehicle, which had been involved in a crash and abandoned, was discovered by cops just three blocks from where victim Makeda Barnes-Joseph was gunned down. She is currently hospitalized but in stable condition.
Smith's lawyer Scott Leemon refuses to comment on the charges but begs fans to "keep an open mind," adding, "things are not always as they seem."
According to Leemon, his client is likely to appear in court to hear the charges against her on Sunday.
Remy Ma received her Grammy nomination as part of the Terror Squad for the 2004 hit single "Lean Back."
She was also named Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at 2005's BET Awards.
