No one told Emma Watson that hoop earrings are Regina George's thing. But the former Harry Potter darling looks every bit the queen bee on the cover of British GQ's May issue — hoop earrings and all.
Watson's R-rated look, which includes a wavy brunette wig, skintight dress with large cutouts, and trail of faux tattoos, is from her next film, Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring. In the film, Watson sheds her bookworm image once and for all by playing the promiscuous, pole-dancing, celebrity thief Nicki.
Watson tells GQ that she was interested in playing Nicki because the character's personality and values are so diametrically different from her own. "When I read the script and I realized that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it's become to our society, I had to do it," Watson tells GQ. "The character is everything that I felt strongly against — she's superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She's all of these things and I realized that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate? But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job, or my role as an actress, could be."
To play Nicki, Watson sexed up her normally chic, sophisticated style, donning Juicy sweatsuits and barely-there ensembles (like the one on the cover) in place of her usual couture. And, while Watson's gorgeous face and designer-friendly figure have made her a fashion icon — on the red carpet and in ads for the likes of Burberry and Lancome — this role marks the first time she will play an overly sexualized role. Will audiences be willing to buy their best friend/study budy as a vixen? If the British GQ is any indiciation, the jump won't be a hard one to make.
