On Sunday, Demi Lovato broke her silence about her father's death. "I feel so humbled to have had support from my fans, friends, family and complete stranger. God bless you all, thank you so much," the singer tweeted.
Patrick Lovato passed away on Saturday after battling cancer for many years, but the exact cause of his death has not yet been confirmed. It is a well-known fact, however, that he did not have the best relationship with his celebrity daughter. After her parents divorced in 1994, Lovato's contact with her father was limited at best, and they gradually became estranged. Her song "For the Love of a Daughter" off her 2011 album Unbroken shed some light their strained relationship and suggests that he had issues with alcohol abuse. When Lovato made headlines for checking into a rehab facility for emotional issues, her father repeatedly spoke to the press about his daughter's personal struggles, very much against her will.
In 2009, the singer spoke to New York Daily News about her decision to cut ties with Patrick Lovato, "The last time I talked to him was two years ago," she said. "You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what to do."
