The pop stars will go head-to-head for Video of the Year -- Beyonce's “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” and Gaga's “Poker Face” will compete against Eminem's “We Made You,” Kanye West's “Love Lockdown” and 2008 winner Britney Spears, who is nominated for her hit single “Womanizer.”
Beyonce and Gaga's singles will also battle for the Best Female Video and Best Pop Video accolades.
Spears will hope to continue her triple winning streak at last year's event after scoring a total of seven nominations -- among the prizes she is shortlisted for is Best Pop Video.
Meanwhile, rap rivals Eminem and West will fight it out in four categories, including Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, while the “Stronger” hitmaker's latest video “Paranoid” has earned him a nomination for Best Special Effects.
The nominees were announced on Tuesday in a video message by British comedian Russell Brand, who will return as the show’s host for the second consecutive year.
The 2009 VMAs will take place in New York on Sept. 13, and will feature performances by Green Day, Taylor Swift, Pink and Muse.
