The mogul's low-budget films about African-American life always seem to hit to hot spot - and he's done it again with I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which stars Taraji P. Henson and features Mary J. Blige in her first film role.

The movie, Perry's seventh in four years, made $24 million (£16 million) at the box office in its opening weekend to cruise to number one.

He more than doubled up on his nearest competition - Tim Burton's new film 9, which took in $10.8 million (£7.2 million) in weekend receipts.

Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve and horror film The Final Destination round out the new top five.

New releases Sorority Row, starring Rumer Willis, and Kate Beckinsale's thriller Whiteout debuted at six and seven respectively.
