The actor played a no-nonsense detective in the show for seven years and spent every summer with no hair, growing it back for the start of each new season.

Currently sporting a Mohawk-style buzz cut to celebrate the end of the drama, the Lantana star tells WENN, "Every year, as soon as I get a break from work, I'd shave my head. I like shaving my hair off.

"The first time I did it was for a play and I really liked it because people's attitude towards you change. Suddenly I'd get in an elevator and people would be afraid of me. I thought that was very interesting to see that people really do identify with their hair. If you take their hair away they get freaked out seriously. It's a whole psychological thing.

"It's a good thing I have a good shaped head, instead of a gnarly bump somewhere."

And now he's thinking of turning his summer haircut into a new documentary.

He explains, "I had some friends who had to go through chemotherapy and even watching them go through that seemed to be more disconcerting to them than the cancer itself, which I found odd. I would've been much more concerned about the cancer.

"I realised there's a documentary in here somewhere - if I can get five friends willing to shave their heads and see what happens. I remember the first time I shaved it off, I looked in the mirror and said, 'Jesus, who's that?' You do actually identify with your hair a lot more than you think."
