Collateral star Ruffalo stepped behind the camera to direct and star in Sympathy for Delicious, the story of a paralysed DJ with the power to heal others but not himself.

And his directorial debut made a big impression at Robert Redford's film festival - earning Ruffalo a special jury prize for his efforts.

Another big winner was Happythankyoumoreplease, written and directed by How I Met Your Mother star Josh Radnor, who also takes a lead role in the film. The movie garnered the audience award for favourite U.S. drama.

Winter's Bone, which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl living in America's Ozark Mountain range, landed the grand jury prize for best American drama as well as the screenwriting award for director Debra Granik and co-writer Anne Rosellini.

Restrepo, which follows the lives of U.S. soldiers fighting in Afghanistan, was named best U.S documentary.
