The Hollywood legend has taken a role in U.S. network HBO's new show Luck, which tells the tale of men who are horseracing enthusiasts.

Hoffman will play a pensioner who is recently released from jail and has a passion for gambling, according to Variety.com.

Dennis Farina and John Ortiz will also star in the new series, which is set to hit U.S. screens next year (11).

It isn't Hoffman's first foray into TV - he won an Emmy in 1986 for his role in TV film Death of a Salesman.
