Police found the Men In Black star sprawled on the floor of the Litchfield Bancorp building in his hometown of Salisbury late at night, clutching a loaded revolver. Torn told cops he thought the building was his home.

The 79-year-old actor, real name Elmore Rual Torn, was reportedly two-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit at the time of his arrest. He was charged with a string of offences, including carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief.

He was released on $100,000 (£62,500) bail and subsequently checked himself into an alcohol treatment centre in New York.

In court on Tuesday (30Mar10), Judge James P. Ginocchio allowed Torn to walk free on $100,000 after the actor promised to stay away from alcohol.

The actor has a history of alcohol abuse and was given probation last year (09) following a driving under the influence arrest in December 2008.

But according to Torn's attorney, A. Thomas Waterfall, the actor is committed to kicking his addiction and has moved from an inpatient to an outpatient rehabilitation programme.

Waterfall tells the Associated Press, "Today we established with the court the excellent strides that Rip has made through his treatment."

Torn is due back in court on 27 April (10).
