The director is currently under house arrest in Switzerland following his arrest in Zurich in September (09).

U.S. lawmakers want Polanski returned to America so he can be handed his punishment for having unlawful sex with a minor in 1977. He fled the country on the eve of his sentencing.

On Tuesday (11May10), several moviemakers showed their support for Polanski by signing a petition at the Cannes Film Festival in France, with stars including Jean-Luc Godard, Agnes Varda, Bertrand Tavernier and Olivier Assayas calling on Swiss officials to reject pressure from America to extradite Polanski.

Douglas admits that although he has a lot of admiration for the Rosemary's Baby director, he won't sign the petition - as Polanski should face the consequences of his actions.

In an interview with French radio station RTL, Douglas insists it would be "unfair" for him to sign a petition for "somebody who did break the law" and "jumped bail," adding Polanski had been given "some bad advice" when the scandal broke.
