James Cameron on Tuesday took part in a brainstorming session with scientists, academics and Washington officials on how to contain the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, media reports say.
US agency officials said Tuesday's meeting was "part of the federal government's ongoing efforts to hear from stakeholders, scientists and experts from academia, government and the private sector as we continue to respond to the BP oil spill."
Cameron and Phil Nuytten, head of Nuytco Research, joined several deepwater and oil sector experts at the meeting.
Cameron spent the Memorial Day weekend in Vancouver visiting Nuytten, who is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Newtsuit, a hard suit that lets divers work at depths of up to 1,000 feet without having to go through decompression, The Globe and Mail reported.
Nuytten also built submersibles for Cameron's 1989 thriller The Abyss.
Cameron studied physics and helped develop deep sea submersible equipment and other underwater ocean technology for a series of documentaries exploring the wrecks of the Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck.
