Gossip Girl fans, I have semi-awful news. The only person that keeps the ball rolling on your favorite Upper East Side-fueled CW drama isn’t going to be a New York City mean girl forever. Leighton Meester let it slip in an interview with E! that she would only continue her role as Blair Waldorf for two more years; when her contract runs up, she’s pulling a Jenny Humphrey and leaving Manhattan behind for greener pastures -- in her case she'll swap Hudson for the Hollywood Hills and (hopefully) more roles in movies alongside more people like Gwyneth Paltrow in the upcoming twangy pic, Country Strong.
That’s funny. I don’t see Blake Lively going around telling people she’s leaving GG and she’s kind of a bigger deal. Meester’s had bit parts in a few bigger movies like Date Night and Going the Distance, but other than starring alongside Paltrow, she’s only got a few B-movies on her slate. Lively on the other hand was already beloved by teen girls for her involvement in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and she’s since share screen time with Ben Affleck in The Town and Ryan Reynolds in next year’s Green Lantern.
I’m not trying to start a classic jealousy-ridden B versus S throw down in real life, I promise. But seriously, Meester should be careful. She wouldn’t want to go the way of Mischa Barton when she left The O.C. behind for her “bustling” movie career. Barton flew the coop too soon, the show died, and she’s become nothing more than the butt of numerous Perez Hilton “jokes.” For Gossip Girl, B’s the glue. Without her, the show is dead in the water, and if her film career doesn’t take off like she hopes, it will just be déjà-vu all over again.
