tracy morganOkay, everyone can calm down. After this morning’s news that Tracy Morgan had some not quite nice things to say about the gay community, he released an apology through his representatives to the Huffington Post:

I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.

Having seen Morgan perform in person, I can vouch that he does get really dark and really dirty, but when I saw him, I never thought he said anything mean. If what the guy who attended last Friday's particular show said is true (all this stems from his facebook note) then yeah, Morgan said some really hurtful and bad things. But spread throughout Morgan's statements of hate, violence encouragement, and homophobia are some things that I understand. I get that he hopes his son has the courage to approach him and tell him he’s gay (even though his negative stance on it would probably discourage such an admission, but that’s another argument). And even though I believe bullying isn’t something that’s settled easily by fighting back or retaliation, "whining" about the less severe cases of it doesn't do much to get rid of the problem either. The way he phrased those messages, of course, was wrong and he’s apologized so let's instead turn this around for a deeper conversation on the matter. Or let's at least go back to wondering if pigeons have the self respect to not eat french fries.
