It turns out you can keep a secret in Hollywood. Missy Elliot recently stated that she has been privately battling Graves' disease for 3 years. This disease effects the autoimmune system and the thyroid, which has seriously taken a tole on Missy's everyday life. Missy discusses the effects of her condition, recalling "I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping...I couldn't write because my nervous system was so bad -- I couldn't even use a pen." As if that's not enough, the hip hop artist admits it not only effected her physically, but mentally as well. She developed mood swings and hair loss while undergoing radiation for hyperthyroidism. As of right now there is no cure for this disease, but luckily Missy seems to have caught it early. If the it is properly treated and maintained then the carrier can live a relatively normal life although your health can deteriorate over time.
Things are looking up though. The Work It singer is back to exercising and has even lost 30 pounds. She states, "My thyroid is functioning, so I haven't had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life." Elliot is coming back in full form and recently announced that she will produce a comeback album with Timbaland. It's going to take a lot more than that to hold this singer back. Nobody puts Missy in a corner.
