This wheelchair isn't big enough for the both of them. Or at least that's Bette Midler's opinion on the matter. Last week Lady Gaga received some scrutiny from disabled groups after performing in a wheelchair at a concert in Sydney, but this little stunt is not only controversial -- it's also stolen. The Divine Ms. M has called Gaga out and referenced how she has done the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair bit for years before Gaga was even a twinkle in our little monster eye. Midler vented about the ordeal on Twitter, saying “I’m not sure @ladygaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people -- and many of them are still alive." The veteran diva also added, "Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar-it's because it is! You can see it on youtube 24/7-with ME performing it ... I've been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980-You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker t*ts - mermaid's mine."
Even though Midler is a singing comedian that doesn't mean she's not seriously upset and offended by Gaga's antics. A friend of Midler's states, “It might sound like Bette is joking but believe me many a true thing is said in anger...she's fed up of these younger stars coming forward and stealing her act." You can't blame Gaga for wanting to learn from the best, but seems to be casting a wide net of enemies in the process. Sorry Gaga, but unless Ariel gets herself into a serious accident, there's only room for one divine diva in a wheelchair.
