Contrary popular belief, not all celebrities turn to divorce whenever things get a little rocky. Some couples actually try to work through it and overcome the obstacles that life sends their way. Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith are a perfect example of doing just that. In their 15 years of marriage, life hasn't always been easy and Antonio admits in the November issue of AARP that they "have had as many problems as anybody." Among them was Griffith's third stint in rehab two years ago. But the Hollywood couple has remained together through all the drama and continue to work through all their plights together, which -- let's face it -- is what marriage is all about.
Banderas goes on to explain how he and Griffith have been completely open and honest with each other throughout her addiction problems. He tells the magazine, "We've never hidden it. We've been open about addictions, in the case of Melanie." This openness extends to their children as well since the actor confesses, "The pretending is the worst, because kids are so smart. They can see through all of those things, and if you don't talk openly about problems, it creates a very dark place. They carry that through the rest of their lives, to their marriages, to their kids." The couple have one daughter together, Stella, while Griffith also has two children from previous relationships: Alexander and Dakota.
In a separate interview with the magazine, Griffith shares her point of view following her addiction and states, "Antonio was supportive to the extent that he can be, but if you're not an alcoholic or drug addict, and you find out that your wife is a bad one, it's hard to deal with. … I wish he would go to a meeting with me or to Al-Anon, but it's very foreign to him. Addiction runs in my family but not in his." But don't misunderstand, she is very grateful for her husband's support. In fact, she was quick to add that, "I don't mean that against him. I would like him to do more, but it's a difficult thing to have happen in any family, and in that way he has been totally by my side. He really is the greatest guy." It's a hard thing for any family to have to deal with, let alone one that's in the public eye, so it's nice to see a couple actually stick together and support each other as well as they have. They seem to be one of the exceptions to the Hollywood marriage curse. Of course, now that I say that, divorce rumors will probably start up, but let's just hope for the best.
