While January has generally been a wasteland for quality motion pictures in years past, there are a few occasional surprises. The film that I believe has the best chance at sleeper-hit status in 2012's first month is Relativity's Haywire, an action thriller directed by the great Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Ocean's Eleven). In it, pro-fighter-turned-actress Gina Carano stars as Mallory Kane, an espionage operative who's been double-crossed by her own and sets out to exact revenge.

With an outstanding supporting cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas and more, Haywire is shaping up to be the diamond in the rough this month, and we've got a little sneak peek of the film for you today in the form of an exclusive clip! Check out this suspenseful scene below, in which Carano teases McGregor, Tatum and company while they're holding her father (played by Paxton) hostage.

Haywire hits theaters hard on January 20. Have a look back at our thoughts on the film from its panel at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con
