It's hard to put the sentiments enveloping the upcoming Battleship feature film into words. Stemming from one of the simplest boardgames out there, one might wonder how a movie can both retain the spirit of the source material and still provide a full, satisfying story. To the wonderers, some might say: ships battling for the conquest of sea is not a theme lacking in value. The idea of opposing naval forces engaging in a deadly war has, and shall continue to, be a gripping industry for the cinema.
But Battleship is amping up the intensity by instilling another theme into the story: the unknown. It's not simply two opposing forces fighting one another. One of the forces stems from the unknown. A superior race with mysterious origins, and superior technology. So the question is: are they unsinkable?
