Last year, the team of John Francis Daley (actor/writer whose face you’d recognize from Freaks and Geeks, Bones and Waiting…) and Jonathan Goldstein scripted the hit comedy Horrible Bosses, their first feature screenplay. Thanks to the popularity of the film, the pair is quickly moving up the ladder to directing, taking on the rumored reboot of the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies.
Disappointingly, the reported plot seems to be carrying forward: Rusty Griswold (who has been played by Anthony Michael Hall, Jason Lively, Johnny Galecki and Ethan Embry throughout the film series) is now the head of his own family, and will be escorting his wife and children on a catastrophic vacation in the vein of his childhood memories. This is unfortunate, as it seems that Chevy Chase, the real star and source of comedy of these movies, will be pushed to the background of the film, if included whatsoever.
Daley and Goldstein co-wrote a funny Horrible Bosses script, but it’s hard to be optimistic about a Vacation movie that doesn’t star Chase. On the other hand, knowing Sam Weir’s passion for 1980s comedy films, maybe audiences should expect something they can all be pleased with.
