When Disney announced a developing project called Wreck-It Ralph, an animated film about a classic video game villain who just wants to be a hero, things looked good. When it was announced that the cast would include greats like John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman, it was like getting five extra lives. When the first batch of genuinely beautiful images from the film were released, it reached bonus-level greatness. But this news? This is practically Game Genie.
Along with its release of the first poster, celebrating Wreck-It Ralph's callback to the golden age of video arcades, MSN has announced that the film will feature some of the world's favorite video game characters. Reilly, McBrayer, Lynch and Silverman will portray original animated heroes and villains, but fans will also get to see appearances by familiar entities: MSN explicitly mentions King Bowser and the Pac-Man ghosts, but that doesn't mean audiences are limited to these villains. Maybe, in true Who Framed Roger Rabbit? form, the movie will feature a cavalcade of Nintendo and Sony classics: Mario, Sonic, Link, Kirby, Samus, Cloud Strife, Pidgey, Slippy Toad, Monkeyball, Kazooie, the Harvest Moon guy, Mr. Resetti, the L-block from Tetris, Dig Dug, Mallow... sorry. Got a little nerdy for a second there.
The film is directed by Rich Moore (Futurama).
