Throughout its developmental stages, Magic Mike has seemed like it might be true double threat. It has the artistic appeal: Steven Soderbergh directing from a story based on star Channing Tatum's real life experiences. And, of course, it has the aesthetic appeal: shirtlessness — lots and lots of Tatum/Alex Pettyfer/Matt Bomer shirtlessness.
However, the first trailer for the highly anticipated movie only scratches the surface on both of these subjects. Instead of focusing on a story about Magic Mike (Tatum) taking a stripping newcomer (Pettyfer) under his wing and introducing him into the underworld of exotic dancing, you're primarily shown scenes tracking Mike's budding relationship with his pupil's sister (Cody Horn), the girl who just might "turn it all around" for him. But this is to be expected in selling a film of this nature — fans shouldn't be deterred from expecting a whole lot more from this project.
And as for the shirtlessness, there is plenty. But there could always be more.
